Cilician Gates

Cilician Gates
Narrow defile through the Taurus (q.v.) range that was the chief passage from the plain of Cilicia into Asia Minor (qq.v.). A beacon system (q.v.) at the west end signaled the appearance of Arab (q.v.) raiders. Cities situated near the Cilician Gates, such as Tyana (q.v.), were attacked repeatedly in the eighth and ninth centuries.
